My Child Is A Cutter… of her own hair…
I know, some of you are saying, yes Sarah, we know this story. KB cut her hair, blah blah blah. No my friends, the villain has struck again!!!
To catch some of you up, last year (about April), I was out of town at a retreat with our staff wives, and Jason called while we were out eating. He said KB had cut her hair! I thought of a few snips, and Jason gently let me know it was just a little more than that. I started crying in the middle of the restaurant. Silly, huh? She has the prettiest hair (I’m biased, I know) with the blonde and the pretty curls. AND IT GROWS SO SLOW!!!!!!!!! I just hated that it had happened. There were scissors in her room (I know, sounds dumb, but we had NEVER had problems before. They were in a basket with all of her art things.) She was supposed to be napping, got bored, did some cosmetology.
My question to Jason was whether or not we would have to cut more of it off to even it out. He assured me no, that it could be disguised by just clipping up the sides with clippies or something… Not so much – here’s what I came home to:
Yeah, a full-blown mullet. As hard as I might try, ya can’t fix a mullet with clippies…. Luckily, it being a Saturday night, I found someone (sweet Aunt Mary found someone) who cut it to even it out. Although we couldn’t do anything about the large chunk that she cut out of the front center of her hair or nearly non-existent bangs. Did you see how curly her hair was??? It’s not been that curly since. So, here was her post-do to even it out:
It’s clear to see how broken up she was about it. As with anything, she doesn’t have long term hurt or guilt about things… she forgives herself VERY EASILY – she’s full of grace! Maybe that will be one of her great attributes as she gets older. She certainly has an ample amount of forgiveness – lets hope it spreads to others.
Well, we banned all scissors like for life. Really, forever. Obviously they came out of her room, and we about went nuts if she touched any. She’s really wanted her hair long, and we’ve slowly worked on it.
Well, this last week she had a friend over (unrelated to the event), and she went to use the bathroom in our bathroom. Sitting out were my makeup scissors (eyebrow trimming), and she apparently thought she needed another makeover. Once again she was under Jason’s watch. This time I really wasn’t as emotional at all when he called. Even if she had cut it all off, I would have been okay emotionally. That first time was the hardest. Again, it was a Saturday, and I asked if I needed to get home to take her to get her hair evened out. Jason said no, but I wasn’t sure I believed him after he said a mullet could be remedied with clippies. THANKFULLY Mrs. Jenny (her friend’s mom) cuts hair!! When she picked her daughter up, she trimmed it and fixed it all!
And, it was definitely not as bad. Here’s a before:
She mainly just cut off both sides up to just under her ears. Jenny was able to just kind of blend in the layers to frame her face and cut more layers into her hair to make it blend. We can still do ponytails, etc. So, not sure what to do to get through to her on the scissors thing, but we’re hoping this is the end!!!

wow! i guess she just prefers a shorter “do” for the hot weather!
Thank you so much for writing about that. I found your blog today b/c my 3 yr old cut her own hair today and I was SO devastated. It was really traumatic. I still feel sick to my stomach.

This is so good to read…my 4 1/2 year old son just cut my 3 year old daughter’s hair yesterday, she had LONG hair down to her waist when wet, but she had ringlettes that made it appear shorter, it is now in a crop cut to just above her shoulders! I was so devastated too, nice to hear I’m not the only one who cried and feels sick to her stomach!
