Monday Musings

I have always had very strange, very vivid dreams.  Most of the time when I say that someone will say, oh yeah, I had a crazy dream one time and blah blah blah.  Then I’ll tell them mine and they’ll say, whoa.  Really.  Mine are crazy, crazy.  When I was a kid, they got to where during breakfast I’d come downstairs and they’d ask what I dreamt about because they were so entertaining to listen to how inane they were.  Jason is always amazed at them too.

Some of the time it’s great.  I can remember them afterwards because they are very vivid.  It’s hilarious to laugh at some of the crazy things my brain comes up with.  I can’t usually remember them more than a day or so or I would tell you one to give you an example.  Maybe the next time I have a nutty one I’ll share.

But, some of the time it’s not great at all.  Because take the vivid and the crazy and add a nightmare, and it’s that much more terrifying.  Jason also is amazed at how horrible my dreams can be.  And, I don’t watch R movies or read scary books – I don’t do scary anymore, for one reason because of the nightmares.  So it’s not something I’m dwelling on when awake at all.  It’s just weird.

When I have a really horrible one, I wake up kind of stiff.  My body kind of locks up, my muscles kind of cramp up, and they hurt – like deep pain.  It takes a while to get rid of the pain part of it – sometimes a couple of hours.  Most of the time if Jason holds me I’m okay, but sometimes I just have to get up.

The stiff body part I’ve done a little research on and it seems like sleep paralysis a little.  I don’t go into a full frozen state, but it’s very similar I think.  It’s basically where something like during REM sleep (when most dreams occur), your body is somewhat disconnected from your brain.  When you come out of the cycle too fast (because of a dream), your body is momentarily kind of frozen while your brain reconnects to your body.  Does this make any sense?  Here’s another article too. I think the first one seems to explain it a little better.

Anyway, I’m awake now from a horrible dream.  Too horrible to share.  But, it sparked what I thought would be an interesting Monday Musings and typing about something else helps me get my mind off of it.  So…

1)  What are your dreams like – mostly good, mostly bad?  Can you remember them?

2)  Do you have any recurring dreams?

    1) I kind of already answered this. Mine are just usually crazy. Mostly not nightmares. I wouldn’t say good dreams but just weird. Amusing afterwards. And, I can usually remember them for about a day or two.

    2) None of mine are really recurring. My nightmares used to be about someone hurting me, but now they are more about my kids being hurt. I think that’s a normal nightmare category for Moms. The weirdness part of mine is just the situation that surrounds how it happens. Crazy, crazy situations.

    1. I also have pretty crazy dreams. Mine are mostly just random and silly almost. Not so much scary, because like you, I never watch or read scary stuff. I’m so celebrity and tv crazy that mine are usually about famous people and in the dream they’re like my best friend. :)

    2. I have this one dream that kind of builds off of the previous one…but I haven’t had it in a while. Over the last few years, I’ve had more and more dreams about my teeth…like they’re falling out or moving or something crazy like that. Ha!

    1. Some are good, some are bad but very vivid. Some I can remember but others like yours are forgotten not long after.

    2. When I moved to Los Angeles from Northern California I had a recurring dream my freshman year that I got shot in the arm while walking down the street by my college. It went away after that. Some are horrifying and some are just plain wierd….like we cloned our son and then accidentally left the real one in Mexico…not on purpose. Those are the kinds of dreams I wake up from either crying or with a horrible knot in my stomach.

    Interesting topic Sarah! :)

I have this recurring dream about high school. It always has to do with basketball and me forgetting my uniform before the games. I wake up and I swear it feels so real. That’s pathetic , I know but I have them all the time!!

    1. Mine can be great (and have my Mom alive still) or they can get really horrible…..terrible. When I wake up I feel like it’s happened……and it takes awhile for me to get back to normal.

    2. Lots of recurring dreams (I’d love to know what they mean) :-) One from my early childhood even…….it has to do with a character (that I still don’t like very much now) chasing me around the house when I was little wanting to tickle me. Sounds funny….but it’s so not. It’s a scary dream.

Ok- I haven’t commented in a while but I had to after reading this!

I think I have a good mix of good and bad dreams, but like you I can’t do scary stuff while I’m awake because I am sure to have a nightmare about it that night.

It’s really odd, but since having Tucker (3 months now) i have had a recurring dream that my teeth are broken and falling out or because I hit my mouth, or bit down to hard on my teeth, or something crazy in the dream. I have had it at least 4 times and in every dream I always spit out parts of my teeth and it is SO real that I wake up completely freaked out. I would love to know what is going on. I’m afraid I’m developing TMJ and my body is trying to tell me something! ha! After reading Becky’s reply about her dream of losing teeth I HAD to comment and say “me too!”. :)

1.I usually have a mix of good and bad too. I try not to do scary not just because of nightmares but because I get freaked out when I’m awake. I felt very safe in the condo because we were on the 3rd floor but now that we’re in the house I’m a lot more anxious about something bad happening.

    2. Lately I’ve been having this dumb recurring dream that Casey leaves/breaks up with me. I try to get in touch with him on the phone but I either can’t dial the number, my phone won’t work, or he won’t answer the phone. I’m sure a dream interpreter would have a field day with that one. I’ve also had two dreams that my dad has died and woken up sobbing. Not fun.

I looked up teeth falling out on Google and apparently teeth falling out is one of the common dreams to have.

    1) crazy dreams, mixture of good and bad, but i can always remember at least one the next morning. sometimes i can remember 3-4 subplots. no real nightmares. but i get worn out by all the action!

    2) does nobody else have the recurring dream where either a) you’re in high school, can’t find schedule or locker or locker combination or b) you’re in college and you can’t find your schedule or c) you’re in college and you’ve just discovered you haven’t been to a class AT ALL and it’s exam time? those are my big recurring ones. i also dream that i’m in college in the dorms again with my old roommates — which is fine until i realize that i have a husband and an 18-month-old who should be with me but aren’t. i don’t know where they are. it is very upsetting.
